New Wage Rates Announced
In a major step to help Indian laborers, the central government has modified minimum wage rates, calibrated them according to the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA).
This decision is intended to assist those in the unorganised sector handle rising living expenses. On Thursday, the Ministry of Labour and Employment made the announcement, stressing the government’s pledge to better the financial health of workers.
Who Will Benefit?
The wage rates that are new will apply to a number of fields, including construction, loading and unloading, security services, cleaning, housekeeping, mining, and agriculture, specifically for those organizations that embody the central sphere. Effective October 1, 2024, these revised wages will arise after the last modifications from this April.
Revised Wage Structure
Based on skill levels, the categories for the minimum wage rates comprise unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled workers, as well as an area classification categorized as A, B, and C. One substantial change is that unskilled construction, cleaning, and loading and unloading workers in area “A” will earn ₹783 per day, which is about ₹20,358 per month.
During this time, semi-skilled workers will receive a daily income of ₹868 (around ₹22,568 each month), which is the pay rate for skilled workers, clerical staff, and security personnel without weapons, who will make ₹954 per day or ₹24,804 per month each. Each day, workers with advanced skills, such as armed security guards, will receive ₹1,035, which comes to ₹26,910 each month.
Becoming familiar with the Revision Process
The central government revises the Variable Dearness Allowance twice each year, beginning from April 1 and October 1. This change is made according to the common rise in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers over a six-month interval. The target is to see that workers’ wages follow the trends of inflation and the increasing cost of living.
